A concert and writing workshop, along with numerous ceremonies and special events will take place during Outer Banks Veterans Week, which will be held Nov. 10-19.
The celebrations will kick off on Fri., Nov. 10 with the Outer Banks Veterans Concert featuring country music duo War Hippies at the Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills.
Scooter Brown and Donnie Reis of War Hippies share unique stories and positive messages through their music.
Brown is an award-winning songwriter and has toured extensively with musicians including Charlie Daniels and The Marshall Tucker Band.
“Being a Marine Corp combat Veteran, I’m especially looking forward to celebrating the Marine Corp Birthday with everyone on the Outer Banks,” said musician Scooter Brown.
Reis is a world-renowned violinist, and he also plays the keys and guitar.
“We’ve got an exciting set planned with a mix of originals and some new music we haven’t released yet,” said musician Donnie Reis. “Plus, we always throw in some favorites from Charlie [Daniels]. Our live shows are always a blast…even better that we get to celebrate with our fellow Veterans on this one.”
Tickets are $10 for military/Veterans and $15 for general admission (adults 21+ only) and can be purchased online here and at the door.
Another highlight of Veterans Week is the 11th Annual Outer Banks Veterans Writing Workshop, which will be held at the UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese on Sat., Nov. 18 and Sun., Nov. 19.
Beginner and experienced writers are invited to participate in this two-day workshop that is free for Veterans, active-duty military and their family members. Educator, editor, and Veteran Dario DiBattista will lead this year’s workshop, which is titled Crafting Poetry.
Although the workshop is free, pre-registration is required and the workshop only has five openings remaining. Veterans, active-duty military and their family members can register online here.
Outside of these cornerstone events, there will be ceremonies, specials, and other events from Southern Shores to Cape Hatteras for Veterans during Outer Banks Veterans Week, which can be found online here in the free Outer Banks Veterans Directory.
One of the events that will be highlighted in the Veterans Directory is The Wall That Heals—a traveling, three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., that tours the country. The Wall That Heals will be on display in Dare County November 16-19 at the Soundside Event Site in Nags Head. This free exhibit is hosted by the Dare County Veterans Advisory Council, which worked to bring the official replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and its accompanying mobile education center to Dare County.
Businesses, organizations and groups wishing to have their Veteran events listed in the directory should email Dare Arts Program Director Michelle Alexander at DareArtsPrograms@gmail.com.
