Dare Arts Opens Registration For Veterans Writing Workshop

The 10th Annual Outer Banks Veterans Writing Workshop will be held at the UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese from 9am to 4pm on Saturday, November 12 and Sunday, November 13.

Veteran, writer and educator Bryon Reiger from New Orleans, LA will lead this year’s Veterans Writing Workshop, which is titled Scene Writing For Stage & Screen.

Bryon Reiger is a Veteran of the United States Army. After nine years of service as a medic and an enlisted nurse, he got his start in playwriting at a Veterans Writing Project workshop and went on to earn a MFA in Creative Writing from the University of New Orleans. His work has been produced on stages in Louisiana and was included in a staged reading in Philadelphia. Bryon is now an instructor and editor for the Veterans Writing Project, and serves as the drama editor of the literary journal O’Dark Thirty.

Even the dust that was once Aristotle would agree that all stories can be broken down into parts; plays and screenplays are divided into scenes,” said Reiger. “Learn what is unique about scenes and try your hand at writing some in a fun and encouraging environment. I hope you will leave with confidence in your ability to write dramatic scenes as well as a good start on a script. This will be my first time traveling to the Outer Banks and I can't wait.”

Beginner and experienced writers are invited to participate in this two-day workshop that is free for Veterans, active-duty military and their family members.

Registration for the writing workshop is now open here. Pre-registration is required. Attendees will receive a confirmation email with more details after registration. The workshop will accommodate up to 25 participants.

Modeled after the DC-based Veterans Writing Project, a non-profit foundation that teaches combat Veterans to express their military experiences through literature, the goal of the Outer Banks Veterans Writing Project is to teach enrolled applicants the art of writing.

The Outer Banks Veterans Writing Workshop is part of Outer Banks Veterans Week, which will take place November 4-13.

The kick-off event will be a performance by country/rock band Brothers Carolina on Friday, November 4 beginning at 6pm at Dare Arts in downtown Manteo.

Dare Arts will be creating the Outer Banks Veterans Week Directory, which is a free online directory of Veteran celebrations, events and specials from Corolla to Hatteras Village.

Groups interested in listing their Veteran events and/or specials in the directory should email DareArtsPrograms@gmail.com.
