Dare County Arts Council Names 2018 Artrageous Scholarship Recipients

Hundreds of adults and children came out to Dowdy Park on Saturday, May 12 for the 29th Annual Artrageous Art Festival.

The free community event celebrates all things art, offering a place where families can participate in high-quality art activities, hear great live music, enjoy delicious food, support local artisans and have fun.

“Artrageous just keeps getting better every year,” said Kill Devil Hills resident Samantha Simmons. “I love the live music and stage performances and my daughter Logan loves the art activities. Painting the peek-a-boo wall is quickly turning into a beloved tradition for Logan. This year she painted me the most adorable mini-canvas for Mother’s Day at Artrageous.”

Proceeds from Artrageous benefit Dare County Arts Council’s cultural arts programming and the Artrageous Youth Scholarship Fund, which awards one scholarship to a senior at each Dare County High School.

The 2018 scholarship recipients are Madison Ball (First Flight High School), Elizabeth Wheless (Manteo High School) and Susanna Couch (Cape Hatteras Secondary School).

This year’s event featured entertainment by the Nags Head Elementary School choir, Static Attitude, student bands from the Mustang Outreach Program, Atlantic Dance, reggae band Sensi Trails with guest Holden McOwen, and Washington, DC based high-energy pop rock band Sub-Radio.

“We really enjoyed being a part of Artrageous, it meant a lot to us especially with it being our senior year of high school,” said Alexandra Byers and Katie Hala from Static Attitude. “Last year we played in the acoustic art walk at Artrageous and this year on the stage. It is so cool to see how far we’ve come and for that to be noticed by organizations like Dare County Arts Council.”

Artrageous was started in 1989 with the goal of creating an annual, free community event that would bring families together to dance, sing and be creative.

PNC Bank was the title sponsor of Artrageous, which was co-hosted by Dare County Arts Council and the Town of Nags Head. Artrageous was also sponsored by Southern Insurance, Joe Lamb Jr. & Associates, Surf Pediatrics, Super Wings, Midgett Insurance Agency, Brindley Beach Vacations, The Don and Catharine Bryan Cultural Series, High Cotton Barbecue, Nags Head Self Storage, Beef Jerky Outlet Outer Banks, Airmakers, Inc., Johnson, Mizelle, Straub & Murphy LLP, J. Trahey Maner Family Dentistry, Colonial Inn and Outer Banks Inn.

A special thank you to artist Ben Morris for drawing the new outline on the peek-a-boo wall, all of the event volunteers and Lucky 12 Tavern, Jersey Mikes (Nags Head), Stack ‘em High (Kill Devil Hills) and Waveriders for donating food for the volunteers.

This project is sponsored by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau.

This project was supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.
