Beyond Pea Island
Art Exhibition
From November to December, our Courtroom Gallery will feature 26 commissioned pieces from the private collection of descendent, historian, and researcher Joan Collins.
Each piece in the exhibit tells part of the story behind the life of Collins' father Herbert M. Collins, who was the last surfman at the historic Pea Island station, and her family's history on Roanoke Island.
Commissioned artwork by the late John de la Vega, Jasmin Miller, and Jas Jeffress will be part of the exhibit alongside other treasured family pieces. The collection will include works in charcoal, oils, acrylics, photography, and collage.
The exhibit and the speaking event in December (more information below) are part of the ALL OF US program, which illuminates the stories of the diverse communities in Eastern North Carolina.

Reception Info +Show Dates
There will be an opening reception on Friday, November 6 from 6pm to 8pm, where visitors can meet Joan Collins and discuss the artwork and her family's history with her. The reception is free and open to everyone.
Beyond Pea Island will be on display November 7- December 19, 2026 in our Courtroom Gallery.
Beginning with the legacy of Lt. Herbert M. Collins, Beyond Pea Island brings overlooked stories into view through art, history, and the voices of those who carry us forward.
Storytelling with Joan Collins
Explore Beyond Pea Island - The Stories That Carried Us Forward with Joan Collins on Wednesday, December 2 at 6:00pm at Dare Arts. Collins will discuss the artworks displayed in the exhibit and share poetry and spoken word about her family.
By sharing lesser-known stories and the experiences of her father and her family through art, Collins hopes this event will provide a deeper understanding of Roanoke Island's history. Artist Jas Jeffress will be joining Collins on December 2 to discuss her process of creating art featured in the exhibit.
This event is free and open to everyone.
