Dare County Arts Council Announces 43rd Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show Award Recipients

The 43rd Annual Frank Stick Memorial Art Show opened on Saturday, January 30th. The show will be on display at Dare County Arts Council in Manteo, NC until February 27th, 2021. Ninety-seven artists entered works in the show, which was judged by Robin York.

The Frank Stick Memorial Art Show is the longest running visual arts exhibit in Dare County and is held in memory of Outer Banks preservationist and artist Frank Stick. Gallery hours to view the show are Tuesday through Saturday, noon to 5:00 p.m.

Robin York is both an artist and art teacher. She taught at Manteo High School for 30 years, and currently teaches painting, drawing, pottery, batik and art appreciation at College of the Albemarle. Robin obtained a BFA in painting and drawing and her Masters in Art Education at East Carolina University and is nationally board certified. Her work hangs in private homes throughout the United States and Europe, and has been displayed in the NC Museum of Art.

Ms. York thoughtfully selected the following award recipients:

Eure Best In Show: Kinga Rojek “Light Under” (acrylic)

Excellence Awards: Gretchen Dibler “Untitled” (oil), Michael Halminski “Green Heron Fledglings” (photography), Ed Obermeyer “Glass Ceiling” (acrylic), Mike Rowe “Resin Vessel” (resin)

Honorable Mentions: Rob Snyder “Mirage Quest” (acrylic), Carol Trotman “After the Storm” (watercolor), Russell Yerkes “Majestic Chaos” (watercolor)

Feeling, strength and beauty. The artist develops from within. He/she is ruled by the spirit.

“In the spirit of Frank Stick's words, I looked for works that evoked "feeling, strength and beauty." I tried to imagine the passion used to create the work rather than just technical skill or painterly expertise. I judged the show based on Frank Stick's philosophy of art and looked for a connection to the natural world, to "see" the work as he might have seen it, and to look behind what is represented on the surface. As always, the Frank Stick show is a difficult one to judge, since artists bring their best work. This show does not disappoint - the variety of media, techniques and subject matter are amazing,” said judge Robin York.

The People’s Choice Award will be tallied at the end of the show, Saturday, February 27th, and the winner announced on the Dare County Arts Council’s website and social media.
