Paul Terrell Exhibit
Miles of Isles
In July, our Vault Gallery will feature original sculptures by Virginia artist Paul Terrell.
This series of works were inspired from watercolor, ink and Conti crayon studies made in Paul's art journals during a recent cruise of the British Isles. Through these mixed media works, Paul is exploring the visual impact of water sky and land.
Miles of Isles features mixed media sculptures of Naked Raku fired ceramics, porcelain, sandblasted wood painted with milk paint, and an experiment with soda fired stoneware. Paul's exploration of “Naked Raku” has all of the final slips and glazes break away like a broken egg shell. The results are the contrasting drawings defined by the rhythms of smoke.

"My interest in Raku fired ceramics is connected to the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi. The art of finding beauty in imperfection and wisdom in nature; 'Nothing is perfect, Nothing is complete, Nothing is permanent.' I embrace the serendipity of Raku fired ceramics. Surface, form, and process are a poetic ritual. I work with Naked Raku fired ceramics because I like the final effect of the random carbon markings on a matte finish caused by all the glaze coming off with the firing process. Often these are combined with the richness of hardwoods for contrast." - Paul
