Kay Franz Solo Exhibit

A Conversation With Clay

In November, our Vault Gallery will feature clay works by Virginia artist Kay Franz.

This exhibition will feature non-functional hand built one-of-a-kind vessels and sculptural works made in clay. Work is detailed with hand applied textures and terra sigillata colorants.

Kay's work has been greatly influenced by her love of nature and of primitive pottery. Kay uses a combination of pinch, slab and coil techniques to build her work. Each piece is bisque fired to cone 05 and fired once again adding stains and or glazes. Some work is given a final firing in an outdoor barrel kiln filled with newspaper and sawdust to yield a smoky, fire kissed finish.

"With clay I am attempting to express and share my innermost self. While we may recognize that we are all connected, we often feel so separated from each other. Through my work I hope we can have an intimate conversation that we may not be able to have face to face." - Kay Franz

Kay earned her BFA in Crafts from the University of Georgia in 1973. Over the years, she has attended many workshops and exhibited locally, regionally and nationally in various shows. Her work is represented in local and regional galleries, and she is a member of numerous arts organizations in Virginia and elsewhere.
