Out On A Whim: Myth, Magic & Mischief
Come venture "Out On A Whim" in November with award-winning artist and poet Kathy Cawthon.
Hallmarks of Cawthon's whimsical style are clean, bright colors, playful characters and light-hearted humor. Her works include fanciful figures and faces, vivid florals, vibrant abstracts, and original poetry woven throughout some images.
"My whimsical style is childlike without being childish, uninhibited and imaginative, loose and lighthearted. Even my abstracts are whimsical, created with clean, vibrant colors; playful, organic shapes, marks and patterns; and rich, multi- layered textures, all of which facilitate my artistic goals of storytelling and healing through visual art."
The artist's proceeds from one special painting will be donated to the Outer Banks Hospital's new Cowell Cancer Center.

Kathy Cawthon is a transplanted Texan now living her dream of permanent residence on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. A graduate of The College of William and Mary, she majored in Language Arts Education and taught at the middle and high school levels for 27 years while also working as a freelance writer and photographer for the City of Hampton (VA) and PortFolio magazine.
"I rediscovered my love of art during several years of treatment for cancer. When I painted, I forgot about upcoming surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments, uncomfortable tests, pain and fear. Since that difficult time, I have explored and studied painting, mixed media, and drawing by attending art retreats, workshops and classes; poring over countless books on wide variety of art techniques and styles; and filling more than a hundred journals and sketchbooks.
My art is about joy and healing, and I paint and draw using a variety of media and techniques. My goal with every painting or drawing is to tell a story that moves viewers to smile or laugh, to feel a pleasant wistfulness or nostalgia, or to recognize or identify with something in the piece."
