Update #3- Coronavirus and the Dare County Arts Council

We hope you are all doing well, and staying safe at home. Dare County Arts Council is closely following all local, state and national guidance on how to minimize the spread of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our artists, volunteers, staff and art supporters. Dare County Arts Council will remain closed until further notice. We will make a public announcement about reopening as soon as possible.

Below is a list of our most recent postponements and cancellations...

  • Our May First Friday opening reception for Bobby Wiltshire’s Watercolor Exhibit that was scheduled for Friday, May 1, 2020 has been cancelled. We are working with Bobby to reschedule his exhibit in the future.

  • The 23rd Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show, which was set to open on Sunday, May 3, has been postponed. We will announce a Call For Entry as soon as we can set a new date.

  • The 31st Annual Artrageous Kids Art Festival that was scheduled for Saturday, May 9 at Dowdy Park has been postponed. We are working directly with the Town of Nags Head and our Artrageous committee to reschedule this special event later on this year. If you signed up to be an Artrageous Art Vendor or to host a Kids Art Activity, you should have received an email from the Artrageous committee last week. If you did not receive this email, please get in touch with us at kidsartobx@gmail.com.

Should any other upcoming events be cancelled or postponed, there will be another update with all of the necessary details and they will be posted on our website and Facebook page.

We are happy to share some GOOD NEWS about some upcoming virtual art opportunities that we have been working on. Please see below...

Mari LaRose will be going LIVE on our Facebook page on Saturday, April 18 at 9am to talk about the book “Philippe in Monet's Garden” by Lisa Jobe Carmack, and to discuss supplies and information for her upcoming FREE Virtual Kids Art Party on Saturday, April 25 at 9am on our Facebook page. During this class, kids will be led step by step in creating their very own Monet frog painting and Mari will teach them about the artist Claude Monet. Class is open to kids ages 5 and up!

  • We will be launching two virtual art exhibits on our website very soon! One featuring paintings by award-winning watercolorist Ryan Fox and one featuring pieces from Outer Banks Milepost's “Stuck Here On Purpose" exhibit. Both of these exhibits were on display at DCAC in March and were interrupted by COVID-19.

  • We’d like to encourage all Dare County artists and performers to share with us the ways you are staying creative during your time at home. For musicians, writers and other performers, we are launching a new initiative today to “takeover” DCAC’s Facebook page for live virtual concerts and readings. For visual artists, we’d like to feature your stories, photos and especially videos of your work on our website and social media. For art teachers, we’d love to work with you to launch your own virtual classrooms on DCAC digital platforms. If you are interested in collaborating with us on these initiatives, please email me at the address below.

For any questions, please email Dare County Arts Council’s Executive Director Chris Sawin at DareArtsInfo@gmail.com.
