Construction Is Underway On Dare County Arts Council’s New Courtyard

Courtyard Project sponsor Southern Bank recently met with members of Dare County Arts Council’s board and staff to mark the beginning of the new art space’s construction.

“The Southern Bank Foundation is pleased to be able to assist with Dare County Arts Council’s Courtyard Project,” said Jason Waughtel, Senior Vice President and Regional Executive.

Dare County Arts Council’s new Program Director, Jessica Sands, will be coordinating a diverse range of art events for the new courtyard in downtown Manteo, including outdoor art installations, workshops, demonstrations and performances.

“The possibilities are endless for the courtyard,” said Dare County Arts Council’s Program Director Jessica Sands. “We’re going to be able to expand our programming and offer a broader range of creative opportunities to our community and visitors, including kinetic sculptures, mural projects, live music, dance, film screenings and so much more.”

Godfrey Construction is working daily on the multi-functional courtyard, which was designed by Ben Cahoon of Cahoon + Kasten Architects.

“After years of discussion and planning it’s a relief to see construction start,” said architect Ben Cahoon. “And soon, as the walls come up out of the ground, it will be exciting for everyone to sense the space being created.”

The Courtyard Project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2021.
