Dare County Arts Council Announces A Call For Entry For Mask Exhibit

The Dare County Arts Council announces a Call for Entry for the Art of the Mask: A DCAC Special Exhibit, presented as a compliment to DCAC’s annual fundraising event the Black Opal Masquerade Ball, which will be held on October 28.

Outer Banks metal, wood, cloth, papier mâché, glass, paint, clay, leather, enamel and jewelry artists are invited to create masks that encourage viewers to explore their imaginations.

“Art and identity form some of the strongest visual images we know,” said Art of the Mask Exhibit Curator Carol Willett. “This year’s annual fundraiser - the Black Opal Masquerade Ball - is intimately linked with our month-long exhibit, The Art of the Mask. Artists from all different media have a unique opportunity to turn their talents toward producing masks and mask-related art that will excite the community and prepare us for a splendid night at the Ball.”

Artists wishing to participate in the Art of the Mask exhibit can find a prospectus HERE and at the DCAC Gallery in Downtown Manteo.

The Art of the Mask is open to Dare County Arts Council members and residents of Dare County age 18 and over. Entries can be dropped off Thursday, September 28 and Friday, September 29 between 10am and 5pm at the DCAC Gallery, 300 Queen Elizabeth Ave. Manteo, NC.

An opening reception for the mask exhibit will be held at Dare County Arts Council on First Friday, October 6 from 6-8pm.

Everyone is encouraged to visit this show to find the perfect mask for Black Opal. The event will celebrate the spirit of creativity and imagination. Tickets to Black Opal can be purchased HERE. and at Dare County Arts Council in Manteo.

“Every year, our big fundraiser enables us to make nearly all of our arts programming free and open to the public,” said Dare County Arts Council Executive Director Chris Sawin. “The mask exhibit is meant to be a preview of this year’s Black Opal event, which promises to be a ton of fun! Costumes and masks are optional at Black Opal, but highly encouraged.”

The Art of the Mask exhibit will remain on display at the DCAC Gallery through Tuesday, October 31. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 12-4pm.

As Black Opal’s Michelangelo sponsor, TowneBank supports the Art of the Mask exhibit along with Dare County Arts Council’s Emerging Artists Series and Power of Art program.
