As a young girl, Fanny Mendelssohn’s musical talent was immediately clear. Born in Hamburg, November 1805, to a family of musicians, she first learned piano from her mother, and studied alongside her brother Felix. Despite her obvious talent, the male members of her family felt that as a woman it would be unbecoming of her to pursue a career as a musician. Behind the scenes, Fanny composed several hundred lieder, more than 125 solo piano pieces, and several large scale works for choirs and orchestras. Although some pieces were published under her brother’s name, she published music under her own name in 1846, only to die tragically just one year later. Her Easter Sonata manuscript, written in 1828, was lost until discovered in 2012 and rightfully attributed to her.…
