Award-winning photographers Shirley Whitenack and Richard St. Peter will teach a two-day photography workshop that will empower you to take control of your camera on Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 at Dare Arts in Manteo.

Class will consist of lecture, demonstration, and on-location photography to enhance the classroom instruction. After a quick review of basic camera operation, we will teach compositional techniques to include utilizing directional light, point of focus, identifying power points, and depth of field (blurred, soft background vs. detailed, sharp background). You will also learn when and how to use fill-flash and reflectors. Class wrap-up will encompass analyzing histograms, image review/critique, organizing and archiving images, photo resources, and follow-up questions. Each participant will receive a binder of photography handouts to keep for future reference.

Class Schedule: 

Friday, May 19:

- 11:00am-3:00pm: Lecture, demonstration, and photographing at Dare Arts in Manteo 

- 6:00pm-8:00pm: Duck boardwalk - Evening photoshoot

Saturday, May 20:

- 8:00am-11:00am: Avalon Fishing Pier – Morning photoshoot

- 11:45am-4:00pm: Discussion, review/share images, and critique at Dare Arts in Manteo 

Class level: Participants should have a comfortable working knowledge of their cameras. This class is open to adults ages 18+. 

Cost: $170 per student. Payment must be made in advance via credit card on the Dare Arts website. Preregistration is required. ***Scholarships are available for adults 50+ for this class. There must be 5 people signed up for class to take place. Max class size is 10 students.

What to bring? Camera(s), lenses, battery charger, instruction manual, digital media, and flashdrive. A

tripod and laptop are highly recommended, but not required. 

Shirley and Richard have been photographing for over 40 years each and have earned the Fellow

of Photography degree from Virginia Professional Photographers Association. Shirley is also a lifetime

member of Professional Photographers of America.

Cancellation policy: Registrations cannot be transferred to future workshops.  No-shows will not receive a refund. If you need to cancel for any reason, we will only refund you if we are able to fill the spot.  If we are forced to reschedule/cancel the workshop for any reason, we will contact you directly about the new date or refund.
