The virtual exhibit below will take you on a tour through Dave Huff's photography.
For a landscape photographer the Outer Banks is a premier location. If the coastal environment is your favorite location, this is it. The ideal scenario is to be out there everyday capturing images, but life interrupts. In March the world changed. It was then that the pandemic had a direct impact on our daily routine. When “Stay Home, Stay Safe” became the routine and we all entered quarantine it provided an opportunity to focus everyday on the Outer Banks. The images presented are not meant to be a story line, but instead a series of photographs taken on the Outer Banks during the quarantine. These images range from Avalon Pier to Oregon Inlet, and from the beach to the sound.

During the quarantine Dave frequently photographed at the four local piers. Each has its own character and can provide a multitude of options for photographs.

Sand Fence Sculpture
The wind has moved the sand around creating curves and shadows. Seeing only the top of the fence tells us its job of dune building is finished.

Jockey’s Ridge Castle
Another use for sand fences is protection Jockey’s Ridge Castle. Once part of a putt-putt golf course, which was covered over with sand in the late 70’s. There was also a giant octopus on the course. Wonder if it is still there.

Wanchese Morning
The time between nautical twilight and sunrise can be a magical hour in Wanchese if the light is right. A fisherman headed out during that time is highlighted as they pass the pier near the old Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant.

Rough Seas at Jennette's Pier
Jennette's Pier is a sturdy structure not fazed by stormy weather. Except possibly the wind turbines which get blown off occasionally. One benefit of photographing under the piers is you are out of the rain, but not the wind. The combination of pier lights and morning sky help to enhance the colors.

Dune Field
The dune field south of Oregon Inlet is a great place to search for composition. When exploring the dune fields, or anywhere along the beach, be mindful of where you walk. Dunes and dune life live a delicate balance that we need to care for.

High Seas
The piers along the Outer Banks lead a tough life. The pounding waves, salt water and wind provide a lot of wear and tear. Occasionally to the point where a portion of the pier is lost. Most often they are rebuilt so that life and fishing can go on. Here the Outer Banks Fishing Pier absorbs some heavy seas.

Coquina Beach Shells

Avalon Fishing Pier
Sunrise at Avalon Fishing Pier. It combines three ubiquitous Outer Banks elements; a beautiful sunrise, a fishing pier and a sand fence.

Ocean Pursuit
On March 1 the Ocean Pursuit, a 41 year old scallop boat, went aground on the north side of Oregon Inlet. The crew was rescued by the Coast Guard but now the boat is slowly sinking into the sand. Two weeks after the grounding I walked down to check it out, not having a vehicle suitable for driving on the beach, or a permit. On that day the winds were 15 to 20 mph out of the north. This shot was taken as I started back and shows the Ocean Pursuit mired in the sand, the new Basnight bridge and blowing sand.

Surf and Sand
The period of time prior to sunrise and after sunset is known as the “Blue Hour” and the time after sunrise or before sunset is referred to as the “Gold Hour”. I generally prefer shooting during the blue hour but this shot was taken shortly after sunrise where the receding wave and sand meet.

End of the Trail
This was the time of year to hike the trails in Nags Head Woods, before the bugs and snakes become active. The Roanoke Sound Trail from Old Nags Head Woods road to the sound ends in an area with dead trees and stumps. It was fortunate to have two boats passing just as I set up for the shot.

Jockey’s Ridge Sand Fence
The area of Jockey’s Ridge around the Castle has a large concentration of sand fences which results in many different shapes and shadows. The variety of minerals in the sand also provide color.

Milky Way and Lyrid Meteors
The annual Lyrid meteor shower was at its peak early in the morning of April 22. About a dozen were observed but I did not think I had captured any until this image was processed. Look closely at the center right portion of the Milky Way and you will see two meteor streaks.

Blue Shovel
Around the fishing and crabbing boats you almost always see blue rubber gloves. I thought it was appropriate when I came across this blue shovel a crabber was using to handle his catch.

Sunrise in South Nags Head
A favorite location for sunrise shots is near the Coquina Beach access. Fairly wide beach, few visitors and a decent dune line. This particular morning the seas were relatively calm and the sky had a nice variety of clouds. A long exposure softened the scene, highlighting the magenta and blue hues of the morning sky and the reflection on the water.

In the Woods
Nags Head Woods Nature Conservancy has several good nature trails to explore. March and April are good times to hike these trails as things start to grow and the bugs and snakes are still asleep. But it is a challenge to photograph. This image was taken just off Sweetgum Swamp Trail.
