About The Event

Join artist Alexis Spina for a free, fun-filled Expressions of Hope & Healing Zoom workshop on Tuesday, April 27 where participants will have the opportunity to use found or collected memorabilia and ephemera to create a cover and interior for their own handmade book. How the books are filled will be up to each participant.

Class will meet on Zoom from 3pm - 4pm.

Supply List: 

  • Thin cardboard (cereal box, clothes shopping boxes, etc)
  • Paper/material of choice for cover (2 pieces that are at least 3 in x 4 in)
  • Large sheet of paper of choice for pages
  • Rubber cement (Elmers No-Wrinkle is a good brand)

Tools: 

  • Exacto knife (scissors will work if you don’t have an exacto)
  • Ruler
  • Bone folder tool (or the backend of a sharpie/paintbrush)

This workshop is free and open to people 14 and up. Registration is required so Alexis can plan accordingly. You can register online at DareArts.org/workshops. Once you register you will receive Zoom class details.

Max class sizes: 20 participants.

Alexis Spina is an artist, metalsmith and teacher. She currently resides in Columbia, NC as Pocosin Art’s metals resident. Alexis obtained her MFA from The University of Georgia in Athens, GA, where she currently calls home.  She has two bodies of work that progress in tandem. The first deals with overreach of government power, while the second is focused on architecture heavily inspired by her hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. 

Expressions of Hope & Healing of the Outer Banks Cancer Community is a project put together by Dare County Arts Council and The Outer Banks Hospital bringing free art workshops and artistic resources to community members who have been affected by cancer. The two organizations are constantly working together to ensure that anyone who has been touched by cancer in any capacity (cancer patients, their family members/friends, caretakers, cancer survivors and our local oncology healthcare professionals) can share their journey and experiences through the arts.
